Landmarks Illinois has named two Northwest suburban historical and architectural treasures to its sixth annual Chicagoland Watch List: the Harmening homestead near Hanover Park and the Central School in Mount Prospect.
Both are endangered and both have faced an uphill fight to dodge demolition, although prospects for saving Central School are improving.

The buildings, two of 13 on the list, will be the focus of the nonprofit organization's advocacy efforts for the next year.
Harmening House
Earning a spot on the Chicagoland Watch List typically means elevated exposure for a property; in the case of the Harmening homestead, the list means simply exposure.
Most Hanover Park residents have never heard of the one-time German dairy farm, and most drivers don't even notice the white farmhouse and barn as they whiz by on the six-lane Lake Street.
Landmarks Illinois first learned of the Harmening homestead in a June Daily Herald article. The group investigated and officials realized they had a gem on their hands.
Built around 1870 by German immigrant Henry Harmening, the farmhouse is a fine example of the Italianate-style homes popular in the latter half of the 1800s. It features a square cupola; wide, overhanging eaves with cornices; and tall, narrow windows with hood moldings.
'The Harmening homestead is irreplaceable,' said Lisa DiChiera, director of advocacy at Landmarks Illinois. 'It's a true overall example of a German dairy community that's long gone.'
It's not just the house and barn Landmarks Illinois finds so remarkable; it's the location. The group doesn't know of any other farmstead of that style and era that exists in the immediate Chicago area.
'You can find some in outer counties,' DiChiera said. 'But not one this close (to Chicago) and one so intact, which makes it that much more amazing.'
Owner Nick Henrici intends to sell the property, so moving the Harmening farmhouse and barn out from the wrecking ball's path will be difficult. 'I sure don't want it saved,' he said.
A profitable sale likely means the Harmening homestead will become part of the adjacent Turnberry Lakes business park.
No one knows the extent of the farmhouse's disrepair, so estimating the cost of restoration is difficult.
The Harmenings moved out in the 1950s and migrant workers employed by the sod farm leasing the land ceased to live there decades ago.
Aside from a yearly paint job, it hasn't been kept up. Its windows are broken, its wood is warped, its roof uneven. There may be water or termite damage, or both.
Unlike the Central School in Mount Prospect, where there's an organized effort to fund its move, Hanover Park doesn't have a historical society to seek its preservation.
'It's in a precarious situation,' DiChiera said. 'Our hope is to educate the public and educate people who may be interested in buying the property.'
Central School
The Central School is arguably Mount Prospect's most historically significant building. Built in 1896, the one-room schoolhouse is a rich repository of 'firsts.'
The Central School was the first meeting place for St. Paul Lutheran Church. It was in the Central School that Mount Prospect's incorporation papers were signed. The Mount Prospect Public Library's first home was the Central School.
'It's that ideal, picturesque, one-room schoolhouse you so rarely find,' said Lisa DiChiera, Landmarks Illinois director of advocacy.

But it must be moved six blocks by February 2008, or the Mount Prospect Historical Society will have to return control to St. John's Episcopal Church.
'If we don't move, it's going to get demolished,' said Gavin W. Kleespies, the society's executive director.
Moving costs have been budgeted at $230,000, and the historical society still has about $27,000 to go, or risk it becoming a church parking lot. St. John's used Central School as offices until 2002, when it sold the building to the historical society for $1.
The historical society has undertaken a massive fundraising effort to finance the move.
It applied to Landmarks Illinois earlier this summer for a grant, which is how the organization became familiar with it.
'We were impressed at the local community effort behind the project,' DiChiera said. 'We viewed it to be a nice example of the one-room schoolhouses quickly disappearing, especially from the suburbs.'
The Mount Prospect village board agreed to spend $40,000 to underwrite the removal of overhead utilities so the building would have an unobstructed path as it is hauled to its new home, next to the historical society at Emerson and Maple streets.

Kleespies said being included on the endangered list recognizes the value of the Central School.
